Gujarat protects three animals found almost nowhere else: the Asiatic lion at Gir, large herds of blackbuck at Velavadar and the Indian wild ass (khur) in the Little Rann of Kutch.

We plan the route, book the safaris and choose lodges close to each park, finishing in Ahmedabad via the Rani ki Vav stepwell and the Modhera Sun Temple.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: VelavadarBlackbuck safari at Velavadar. Herds of these spiral-horned antelope roam the open grasslands, with harriers and other raptors in winter.
Day 2: Sasan GirDrive to Gir, home of the Asiatic lion, leopards and antelope. Visit the Devalia Safari Park or the Kamleshwar Dam with its marsh crocodiles and birds.
Day 3: Little Rann of KutchMorning Gir safari, then drive to the Little Rann. The Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary (est. 1971) covers about 5,000 km² and shelters the khur, Indian wolf, desert fox, nilgai and many migratory birds.
Day 4: Little Rann to AhmedabadMorning jeep safari, then drive to Ahmedabad via the Rani ki Vav stepwell at Patan and the Modhera Sun Temple.
Day 5: Ahmedabad & departureAhmedabad sightseeing. Drop at Ahmedabad airport or railway station, as per the final itinerary.

Flamingos and other migratory birds are usually seen from November to March, when there is water in the Rann.
